Dr. Cotton and Mrs. Swygert, our School Board Chair, visited several Deep Creek area schools this morning to check in with building principals about the start of the school year and chat with students and staff. 💜
They even stopped by to see Mrs. Swygert’s senior picture on the wall at her alma mater, Deep Creek High School. She is a 1993 graduate and proud Hornet! 🐝

September marks Attendance Awareness Month! 🍎
We hope that you are having a great first week of school! Starting as early as kindergarten, a student's attendance plays a vital role in their academic success. By the time they reach 6th grade, chronic absence can become a troubling predictor of potential dropout risks. Remember, achievement begins with showing up! #AttendanceMattersVA

Did you know that the Chesapeake Public Library has so much more to offer than books? 📚

Reminder for Families! Your student’s assigned 🚍 bus route information is available on our website, using our Bus Stop Lookup Tool, and in ParentVUE, by selecting “additional information” under “Student Info.” In order to create more efficient routes for our drivers and families, the Department of Transportation makes a significant number of route and bus stop changes during the first 3-4 weeks of school. As a result, the School BusHub App may not work for your student until these changes are finalized. We encourage you to check back frequently.

We wish all our teachers a great #FirstDayCPSVA, especially our new teachers! You've made a great career choice, and we are so glad you chose Chesapeake! 🍎👏

We are still celebrating the great work that our "Grow Our Own" interns completed this summer! Jasmine Criste, a rising STEM Academy senior at Grassfield High School, was an intern in the Communications Department.
Last summer, she interned with the Transportation Department. As a part of the Communications Department, she enjoyed the creative side of the projects and the liveliness of the workplace. One of the projects her team completed together was a "Why Chesapeake" promotional video that they debuted at our New Teacher Orientation. Take a look at their work: https://youtu.be/x-SaBsPGTI4
In the future, Jasmine plans to either become a Biomedical Engineer 🧑🔬 or Pharmacist 💊. She also participates in several extracurricular activities like basketball and volunteering for Key Club. “If an opportunity comes at you, don't ignore it or take it for granted,” Jasmine shares, “it may not always come back to you.” Luckily for Jasmine, she was able to try the program out once again. “Grow Our Own” can be a life changing experience for students, so don’t miss out!

Our teachers are back! 🍎😀
They are already busy this week participating in teambuilding activities, completing important training, and setting up their classrooms for the #FirstDayCPSVA!
