Virginia Growth Assessments
Students in grades 3 - 8 will take fall Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) in reading and math during the September 30 - October 11 testing window. The VGA will primarily measure content from the student’s previous grade level but may ask some questions above or below the targeted grade level, depending on student answers.
There is no passing or failing score for the VGA; they are intended to ensure that teachers, parents, and students receive feedback on how well a student has mastered content that may be needed for success in the current school year and to identify areas where a student may need additional support.
Do all students in grades 3-8 take the fall VGA?
Not all students enrolled in grades 3 - 8 will take the VGA.
Middle school students taking Algebra or Geometry will not take math VGA.
Students eligible for the Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP) do not participate in the reading or math VGA.
What should my child bring on VGA test day?
It is expected that your child will bring their fully-charged Chromebook to school on testing days. Please note that cell phones, personal electronic devices, and other unauthorized materials are not permitted during testing.
Virginia Assessment Performance Reports
Your child’s SOL test scores from last spring, including students who participated in VAAP, are now available through the Virginia Assessment Parent Portal. Access codes and directions will be available in your Synergy ParentVUE documents folder, along with last spring’s writing SOL reports.
The Virginia Assessment Parent Portal is a web-based portal that will allow parents to review each student’s SOL or Growth Assessment Parent Report and Student Detail by Question (SDBQ) Report.
Parents without an account will need to create and verify a Family Account. The account will remain active through multiple years and only one account is needed for each family.
Access codes for fall and winter Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) will be provided to parents in the ParentVUE documents folder by October 11. Your child’s fall VGA performance reports will be posted within 10 school days of test completion.
The state Parent & Caregiver Resources for Virginia Assessment website provides additional resources for determining your child’s performance, questions to ask your child’s teachers, and support tools to help continue learning at home.
