On Saturday, Indian River High School hosted Operation Military Families! Operation Military Families allowed for our district's military families to participate in information sessions and fun activities for students.
Throughout the evening, families were able to get complimentary family portraits taken by Lifetouch, enjoy performances by the U.S. Fleet Forces Band Woodwind Quartet, eat a pizza dinner and learn about resources offered to military families in our area.
Special thanks to Captain Matt Frauenzimmer for taking the time to speak to our families and the Office of Family and Community Engagement for continuing their commitment to serving our community.

Congratulations to four of our student councils who were recently named 2024 National Gold Councils of Excellence. 🥇
Western Branch Middle School was the only middle school in Virginia to earn the recognition. Western Branch High School received the award for the first time, and Grassfield High and Hickory High both earned the honor again this year.
Deep Creek High, Grassfield High, Hickory High, and Western Branch High were also recognized with the VSCA State Achievement Award.
In addition, Western Branch High received the VSCA Outstanding Service Project Award and had two students, Jayla Washington and Amari Sykes, elected to state VSCA officer positions.


Last Friday, B. M. Williams Primary School hosted a parade for its military families to celebrate April as the Month of the Military Child. Students and their families were invited to parade through the halls wearing their service uniforms and their red, white and blue.
A special thanks to School Board Members, Dr. Brittany Walker, Mrs. Kim Scott, and Mr. John McCormick for attending the event, as well as principal Mrs. Allison Taylor for the continued commitment to honoring our military families.

Last week, Indian River Middle School participated in their Braves Give Back initiative to support Evelyn's Wildlife Refuge. 🦝🦊 Students spent the week making 40 fleece blankets to distribute to the refuge and other wildlife rehabilitation locations.

Yesterday, third grade students at Southwestern Elementary were able to participate in a Fire Safety Education Program! The program was presented thanks to a collaborative effort between the Chesapeake Fire Department, the Department of School Safety and Security and Curriculum and Instruction.
Students got to learn about fire prevention methods, how to identify an emergency and what to do in an emergency situation. They even had the opportunity to explore a fire engine while participating in fun and creative activities!
Special thanks to the Chesapeake Fire Department and the Community Risk Reduction Division for their continuing commitment to educating our students and our community.
