The Virginia Department of Health outlines immunization requirements for schools in Virginia in accordance with šŸŒVirginia Code Ā§ 22.1-270, Ā§ 32.1-46.


Immunization Requirements for students in grade 7 and 12

In the state of Virginia, three vaccines are required for all students entering grade 7: 

  1. Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap)
  2. Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY)
  3. Human Papillomavirus (HPV)* (dose 1)

Two vaccines are required for all students entering grade 12: 

  1. Meningococcal ACWY vaccine (MenACWY) (administered after the studentā€™s 16th birthday)
  2. Human Papillomavirus (HPV)* (dose 2)

Documentation of these immunizations must be submitted to schools before the first day of class or the student will not be permitted to attend. Please call Health Services at šŸ“ž757-494-7628 if you have any questions.

*Note: After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent/guardian, at their sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine. VA Code 32.1-46.

The following events and resources are available to our families - many of them are free!

  1. GET ON THE BUS
    Families can register for required immunizations at our Get on the Bus event! Sign up today to secure your spot!
    Get on the Bus - Thursday, August 1, 2024, 4 PM at the Chesapeake Conference Center

  2. LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT
    If your child does not have a healthcare provider, you can find a Vaccines for Children provider at https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/immunization/vvfc/locatevvfcprovider/. These providers are also able to administer free vaccines to persons who are not able to pay.

  3. LOCAL PHARMACIES
    Many local pharmacies offer immunization appointments. Check their website or ask the pharmacist!


Newly Enrolled Students

Families enrolling in Chesapeake Public Schools must provide documentation of compliance with the Code of Virginia for physical examinations. The school physical form is provided by the Chesapeake Health Department, or online at the Virginia Department of Educationā€™s website. This form should be completed by your childā€™s physician and should include proof of adequate age-appropriate immunizations.
