Chesapeake Virtual Academy (CVA) offers students the opportunity to take a variety of fully online courses as part of their K-12 school experience. To learn more about this online learning opportunity taught by Chesapeake teachers, please visit the CVA website or select a grade level link below. An informational parent and family webinar was held in January. A recording of that webinar is available on our district Youtube page.
Online Learning
Chesapeake Public Schools is proud to offer a variety of fully online courses to all students enrolled in the school division. Online learning ties in with our strategic goals – empowering our teachers to connect with students across the division while increasing student engagement and choice.
Online learning offers flexibility to students while providing instruction aligned with the Chesapeake Public Schools curriculum and Virginia Standards of Learning. Online courses require students to work independently, demonstrate excellent time management skills, and be motivated to succeed as a disciplined and self-directed learner.
Our students may take advantage of online courses for initial credit through Chesapeake Virtual Academy (CVA) or, in certain circumstances, Virtual Virginia. High school students also have opportunities to enroll in credit recovery if they need to earn credit from a course they previously failed. School counselors are available to assist students with selecting courses and enrolling in online learning opportunities.

Virtual Virginia
Virtual Virginia is a program, operated by the Virginia Department of Education, that serves students throughout the commonwealth and beyond. Teachers in the program are employed by Virtual Virginia and students learn alongside peers from other Virginia school divisions using Virtual Virginia’s Canvas learning management system. The program offers online courses, digital content, and professional development opportunities to schools, students, and educators across the Commonwealth.
Chesapeake Public Schools (CPS) students taking courses through Virtual Virginia remain connected to their zoned CPS school while receiving instruction from Virtual Virginia teachers. Students may participate in all school-sponsored sports, clubs, and activities. While students enrolled in the Virtual Virginia program can complete their coursework from any location where internet access is available, they may be required to report to their zoned school to complete assessments mandated by Chesapeake Public Schools, the Virginia Department of Education, and/or the College Board. Because Virtual Virginia serves students across the state of Virginia, their school calendar varies slightly from the Chesapeake Public Schools calendar.
Students who enroll in Virtual Virginia courses must be independent learners, self-motivated, willing to ask for help when needed, and able to communicate effectively through email. Specific information about the Virtual Virginia program at the middle and high school levels, including links to an application for enrollment, can be accessed by selecting the links below or contacting your child’s school.
Student Support
Online Learning Tools
To support additional at-home learning opportunities, we have compiled a list of online resources that will provide students with practice using instructional digital tools.
This does not replace direct teacher instruction but rather reinforces skills that either are already taught in the classroom or have been identified as focus areas. These Digital Tools provide a number of ways students can stay connected to their learning by:
Reviewing materials and topics taught earlier this year
Previewing future topics
Exploring additional topics and materials of interest
Students with special needs have a great ally in technology. Google Chrome offers many extensions for accessibility that can assist in a variety of areas; including, text to speech, speech to text, readability, reading comprehension, focus, and navigation.
We will continue to develop and add to these resources.
