Chesapeake Public Schools School Board

Due to the resignation of School Board Member Dr. Brittany Walker, the School Board of the City of Chesapeake, made up of nine at-large members, will have a vacant seat beginning May 3, 2025.  The term of the seat vacated by Dr. Walker expires on December 31, 2026.

Virginia State Code § 24.2-228(A)

According to State Code, because the vacancy is for the remaining 20 months of a four year term and will thus extend beyond the next general election, the Board is permitted to select a candidate to serve as an interim for the first eight months of the term, through December 2025, and petition the circuit court for a writ of special election to coincide with the next general election (November 2025).  The Circuit Court then enters an order allowing the public to elect a candidate to fill the remaining one year of the term, through December 2026.
