  What is BYOD?

  • BYOD is an acronym for Bring Your Own Device.
  • “Bring Your Own Device” is a program where staff and students can bring their privately-owned computing devices to school and connect them to the division’s wireless network that will allow filtered Internet access on school property.


  • Allowing students to bring their personal devices to school will:
  • Equip students to compete in a global learning environment
  • Foster student ownership of their own learning
  • Provide real-time access to information
  • Create a smooth transition between home and school
  • Provide personalized learning in the classroom
  • Supplement school resources and equipment

How will mobile devices be used in the classroom?

  • Projects
  • Research
  • Response device for assessments
  • Collaboration
  • Presentations
  • Other instructional and school related purposes

Which mobile devices are allowed?

  • Internet enabled devices that can connect to the district’s wireless network
  • These devices may include, but are not limited to:
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Laptops
  • E-readers

How will BYOD be implemented at WBMS?

  • Each area of the school will be a designated zone:
    • Green Zone: Devices may be used at all times (only after school)
    • Yellow Zone: Devices may be used ONLY at teacher discretion (classrooms, media center)
    • Red Zone: Devices are never allowed (restrooms, cafeteria, hallways, locker rooms)
    • Use of the BYOD network is for instructional and school related purposes only
    • Students must register their devices ahead of time
    • Parents must sign permission form for each registered device
    • Phones will be in airplane mode

Can students use their devices in class at any time?

  • No. The teacher in the classroom has the final say on procedures in the classroom.
  • Access is only available, not guaranteed for each classroom situation.
  • Students who use devices without permission will be subject to disciplinary action.

Are teachers required to use student devices in the classroom?

  • No. Although we encourage teachers to leverage the student-owned technology tools in their classroom for learning, there is no requirement of teachers to allow this.
  • Teachers are in charge of the way their class functions and the rules that apply.

How will student be prevented from texting their friends or surfing the Web?

  • Teachers must be diligent.
  • Students will be instructed on appropriate times and way the devices can be used
  • Students will also be instructed to put DEVICES AWAY when they are no completing a specific instructional task

How will students access the internet?

  • Students will access the internet through the CPS wireless network on a registered device.
  • No outside data services may be used while on school property or at school events. Internet filtering is a requirement of all public schools.
  • Any and all access may be monitored for the purposes of network security and student safety

What are the responsibilities of the students?

  • Read, agree and adhere to the CPS Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Access the internet through the CPS network only. Access to the internet through data plans such as 3G/4G network is prohibited.
  • Students will sign in using their network username and password to browse the Internet
  • The student is responsible for the condition of the their device used for BYOD including updates, antivirus software and any repairs.
  • Personal devices should be brought to school fully charged and should be capable of lasting a full school day without recharging.
  • The student is fully responsible, at all times, for personal devices brought to school. CPS is NOT responsible for any theft or damage.

What are some of the other guidelines in place for students?

  • At this time, students will not have access to email. However, students will have access to CPS approved Web 2.0 any social networking sites such as Edmodo and Desire2Learn for instructional purposes.
  • Unauthorized audio or video recording is prohibited. Voice, video, and image capture applications may only be used with prior teacher permission and for a specific instructional purpose.

Can students print from their devices?

  • No. Students will not be able to access printers at CPS from their personal computing devices at this time.

Is technical support available for student devices?

  • No. Each student is responsible for his/her own device: set-up, maintenance, charging, and security
  • Staff members will not store student devices at any time, nor will any district staff diagnose, repair, or work on a student’s personal telecommunication device.
  • It is not the responsibility of the teachers or other CPS staff to troubleshoot individual devices.

What are a parent’s responsibilities?

  • Carefully read and review the Acceptable Use Policy with the child.
  • Complete the BYOD permission form with make, model and serial number of each device.
  • Be sure the child’s device is in proper working order and is fully charged daily.
  • Monitor the child’s usage of his or her mobile devices.

What if a child doesn’t have a device to bring to school?

  • Not every child will have their device
  • Students without a personal device will be provided access to an appropriate district-owned device based on availability or provided with an alternative way of completing the assignment.
  • Students may collaborate with another student as appropriate.
