Bully Prevention

Western Branch Intermediate will address instances of bullying, inappropriate and unkind behavior directed toward other students using the following guidelines:

  • Recognize bullying/inappropriate and unkind behavior.

The School Counselors will assist students, faculty, and parents in identifying and addressing these forms of student behavior through scheduled meetings.

  • Educate and promote good character traits necessary for strong interpersonal skills.

This will be accomplished through classroom meetings, guidance lessons, counseling sessions, role play, reading of books, classroom lessons, Positive Behavior Charts, and defining and reteaching BRUIN expectations.

  • Develop social-emotional skills in students.

Social emotional learning skills will be introduced in classroom guidance lessons and supported in every classroom to help students learn appropriate ways to identify and communicate feelings as well as respectful ways to treat others and resolve conflict.

  • Report inappropriate/bullying behavior.

Students and parents are requested to report inappropriate and/or bullying behavior to the classroom teacher, a school counselor or a school administrator as soon as possible so that support services and interventions may be provided. Students are able to report concerns directly to the school counselors using the guidance request form and mailbox which are available in the Guidance Suite.

Recognize-Refuse-Report

Recognize the difference between conflict and bullying behaviors. Bullying is repeated, one-sided and involves an imbalance of power.

Refuse to be bullied /use assertive communication to say no to bullying behavior. Bystanders play a key role.

Report the bullying to the teacher, the school counselor, school administrator, bus driver or parent.
