School Board Member Vacancy

District news story update, January 25, 2022:

On Monday, January 24, the School Board appointed Mr. Louis Tayon to fill the vacated seat.

This district news story was updated January 6, 2022.

Due to the election of School Board Chair Victoria L. Proffitt to Commissioner of the Revenue for the City of Chesapeake, the School Board of the City of Chesapeake has a vacancy. The term of the seat vacated by Ms. Proffitt expires on December 31, 2024.

According to State Code (Va. Code § 24.2-226 and §24.2-228), because the vacancy is for the remaining three years of a four year term and will thus extend beyond the next general election, the Board is permitted to select a candidate to serve as an interim for the first year of the term, through December 2022, and petition the circuit court for a writ of special election to coincide with the next general election. The Circuit Court then enters an order allowing the public to elect a candidate to fill the remaining two years of the term, through December 2024.

At the regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, January 10, 2022, the Chesapeake School Board will receive public comment on filling the vacant position on the School Board. The hearing will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the School Administration Building, 312 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, Virginia. All registered speakers will be allowed the customary three minutes. Candidates are welcome to speak in favor of their own candidacy.

Persons who wish to address the Board on this matter may register to speak by calling the Office of the Clerk of the School Board at 757-547-1047.
