Chesapeake School Board Supports Superintendent’s Recommendation for Two Weeks of Online Learning for All Students in January; District Reveals Updates to Data Dashboard and Extends the Pause on Winter Sports
At the Chesapeake School Board Meeting on Monday, December 14, 2020, Superintendent Dr. Jared Cotton provided several important updates and recommendations to the Board.
Most notably, following guidance from the Chesapeake Health Department, Cotton recommended a two week shift to Temporarily Online instruction for all students following the Winter Break. From January 4th through January 15th, all Option 1 students will shift to Temporarily Online instruction. Employees who are able to telework may do so with approval from their supervisors.
“We’ve been watching school-level data and based on what we witnessed following Thanksgiving, we believe that two weeks of reduced campus activity after the upcoming holiday break will result in less of an impact to operations across the district when on-campus instruction resumes on January 19, 2021. We will be tracking the data, both quarantine numbers and positive test results at each location, to see if this strategy proves effective,” said Cotton.
Chesapeake Public Schools will also extend its pause on athletics through the week of January 4th to allow more time to discuss mitigation plans and determine if additional adjustments need to be made.
The district will continue to provide meals to students at all school locations on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the period of online instruction.
Cotton also presented updates to the current Data Dashboard that now includes a one week look at the quarantine and enrollment numbers for each school location. This information is collected by school health advisors each week and will be updated on the dashboard each Wednesday, reflecting the information for the previous week.
Compensation enhancements for employees were also discussed including a one-time bonus and additional raises effective February 1, 2021. View the budget presentation for more details.
