This week we honor Jasmine D. In addition to being in our concert band and an all-around great student, Jasmine found an iPhone in the cafeteria last week and promptly turned it in to Admin. She probably saved someone’s social life from taking a major hit and should be honored as a hero, at least in the eyes of the phone’s owner. Keep up the great work, Jasmine!

Cathy Meador could have been Teacher of the Month for almost any of the 20 plus years of terrific service she gave to Chesapeake Public Schools! Cathy did so much for Oscar Smith High School over the years. She was an outstanding mathematics teacher and a great guiding force as the chair of our very large mathematics department. Cathy and the members of the math department collaborated long before it became the norm. Under her tutelage, the math department thrived, even in the face of increasing demands. We appreciate all she has done for all of us and wish her well in retirement.

Oscar Smith Graduate Kenny “The Enforcer” Easley has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Easley was an electric player while at Oscar Smith becoming the first player to throw and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season in Virginia. Kenny went on to UCLA (3 times All-American) before being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks (1981-1987) where he would be selected for 5 Pro-Bowls, win NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1984, and be chosen for the All-Decade Team. In 1996 Oscar Smith Honored Kenny by naming the Football field in his honor (Beard-DeLong-Easley Field). Kenny will be joining the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with 6 others in the 2017 class and has chosen his former coach at Oscar Smith, Tommy Rhodes, to give his induction speech. Congrats to Kenny and his family for this amazing honor.
