Chantal P. is the Student of the Week. She was extremely helpful when another student had a medical emergency. Chantal made sure the girl did not fall and hit her head and ran to get assistance as soon as she could. She stayed with that student until emergency personnel responded. Tigers helping tigers; great work, Chantal!
Even though she’s new to us, Holly Sawyer, who works with our ESL (EL) students, has made her mark on our school in a very short period of time. Ms. Sawyer works with the students who come from other countries who have the lowest levels of English fluency. We have to share her each day with Crestwood Middle School, so her time here with our kids is very precious. The Virginia Department of Education offers a seal on the diploma for students who are fluent in more than one language. The default in our city has been for traditional English language native students to take a test (Apple test or I.B. Foreign Language exam) to demonstrate fluency in a language such as French, Spanish, or Russian. Our ESL students can demonstrate fluency in English by taking one of these tests. Four of our students are attempting to do that this year. Ms. Sawyer has been the driving force behind this initiative and we are grateful!
