Student of the Week!

Ciara W is our newest Student of the Week.  Ciara was Oscar Smith High School’s recipient of the Chesapeake Sports Club Student-Athlete Scholarship.  Walker played a key role on our girls’ basketball team this year and will go on to further her studies at Virginia Tech next year.  Congrats, Ciara!!

Teacher of the Month

John Kramer, an outstanding member of our English Department, announced his plans to retire at the end of the school year and is our Teacher of the Month.  He has been the consummate teacher throughout his teaching career here at Oscar Smith.  Mr. Kramer is able to easily connect with his students, as well as all members of our faculty and staff.  His wit and wisdom will be sorely missed.

Graduation Yard Signs for Sale

Oscar Smith High School Class of 2018Celebrate your Senior while also supporting the OSHS PTSA Scholarship fund by purchasing a Class of 2018 Graduation yard sign. Signs are weatherproof, measure 18” x 24”, and come with a yard stake. You may purchase one for $20 by contacting Jill Wynne at 757-729-3828.

Charlie Stukes in VHSL’s Hall of Fame!

Charlie StukesCongratulations to Charlie Stukes, our former Assistant Principal, who has just been named to the Virginia High School League’s Hall of Fame Class of 2018.  Coach Stukes attended Crestwood High School and was a multi-sports star from 1960-63.  He earned all-state status in football, basketball, baseball, and track.  His high school basketball teams won back-to-back state championships.  Coach Stukes starred in football, basketball and baseball in college at Maryland State College, now University of Maryland, Eastern Shore.  He was a three time All-CIAA defensive back.  Additionally, he earned All-American status in baseball, leading the NCAA in RBI’s, batting .492 and .489 his junior and senior years.   Coach Stukes played on two Baltimore Colts Super Bowl teams.   He finished his football career with the Rams.  Coach Stukes then became the head football coach at Oscar Smith High before becoming and Assistant Principal.  Clearly, a well earned honor!

Flowers 4 SaleIt’s that time of year!!!  If you plan to plant spring annuals, consider supporting the OSHS Orchestra by ordering beautiful begonias, marigolds, and impatiens from Bennett’s Creek Nursery!  Orders are due May 2nd & our delivery day is Saturday, May 5th.  If you pick up is on the bus ramp at OSHS.  Order forms are available from the Orchestra Room or Main Office.  Thanks in advance for your support!!

IB Program 2022 Cohort is Complete

IB World School LogoWe are pleased to announce our IB Program Class of 2022 cohort is now complete. At this time, we will not be accepting additional students from the waiting list.  Thank you to all students who applied to the IB Program.  We wish you continued success.

Farm Fresh Program Ending

With the sale of most Farm Fresh stores, the key tags that you have been using are no longer needed.  We were able to reach our goal of 70,000 points this year, which will enable us to acquire a few needed items for our school.  Thanks again for all of your support.

Post-Prom Help

Teacher of the Year!

michalene crosbyCongratulations to Mrs. Michalene Crosby, our 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year!  Mrs. Crosby is the Department Chair for English and is teaching in her 12th year at OSH, with 14 years overall teaching experience.  You can read the FULL RELEASE and be sure to congratulate Mrs. Crosby when you see her.

Study Hall Update

OSHS Study Hall will begin on Tuesday, September 12th.  Study Hall will be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:50 to 4:40.  A STUDY HALL Information (PDF) is available with additional details.

Oscar Smith’s Kenny Easley Elected to HOF!

Oscar Smith Graduate Kenny “The Enforcer” Easley has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Easley was an electric player while at Oscar Smith becoming the first player to throw and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season in Virginia. Kenny went on to UCLA (3 times All-American) before being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks (1981-1987) where he would be selected for 5 Pro-Bowls, win NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1984, and be chosen for the All-Decade Team. In 1996 Oscar Smith Honored Kenny by naming the Football field in his honor (Beard-DeLong-Easley Field). Kenny will be joining the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with 6 others in the 2017 class and has chosen his former coach at Oscar Smith, Tommy Rhodes, to give his induction speech. Congrats to Kenny and his family for this amazing honor.

OSHS Named a Blue Star School AGAIN!

Once again, Oscar Smith High School has been named a 2015-2016 W!SE Blue Star School. Blue Star status is awarded to a school, testing more than ten students, that has achieved a 75% passing rate on our Financial Literacy Certification Test and has EITHER a majority of students on a given grade level take the Test OR have the students who took it achieve an average score of 85% or higher. This is no small feat; congrats to all Faculty and Students who were involved in this honor!!
