Parent and Family Engagement Policy/Plan and Procedures

PART I-SCHOOL PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT POLICY/PLAN REQUIRED COMPONENTS

  1. Rena B. Wright Primary will jointly develop/revise with parents the school Parent and Family Engagement policy/procedures and distribute it to parents of participating children and make available the Parent and Family Engagement policy/procedures to the local community.

Rena B. Wright  Primary administration and staff will communicate with families by providing the following:

  • Involve parents in the development, revision, and review of the Parent and Family Engagement Policy/Plan by soliciting volunteers to be a part of the advisory board.

  • Utilize feedback collected from surveys to ensure parental areas of concern are heard and addressed.

  • Make the plan available to the school family and community promptly by

              -posting the annually updated information on the school website

-including in the Tiger Talk principal’s newsletter

              -utilizing Thrillshare to send out texts

-email 

  1. Convene an annual meeting, at a convenient time, to which all parents of participating children shall be invited and encouraged to attend, to inform parents of their school’s participation under this part and to explain the requirements of this part, and the right of the parents to be involved.

Rena B. Wright Primary will hold an annual meeting at the beginning of the school year. Parents and students will be shown a detailed slide show presentation during the meeting that includes the Title I video.  They will be introduced to the PFE plan and the expectations that will be carried out throughout the school year.  

Specific dates and times the event was held:

  • The first session was held on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at 5 p.m. for ECSE, CPI Pre K, Kindergarten, and SPED ID in the cafeteria 

  • The second session started at 6 p.m. for 1st grade, 2nd grade, and LEAD  in the cafeteria 

  • At the end of each session families were directed to visit their students’ classrooms to view the Title I video and meet with teachers

  1. Offer flexible meetings, such as meetings in the morning or evening, and provide, with funds provided under this part, transportation, child care, or home visits, as such services related to Parent and Family Engagement.

Rena B. Wright Primary will offer flexible meeting dates and times to be more inclusive and increase attendance rates during these meetings.  

These meetings will be made available to parents and families-

  • before, after, and during school hours allowing more parents an opportunity to meet/participate in school activities.

  • Saturday during the day may be offered to meet/participate in school activities

  • families will be invited to participate in PFE activities at the feeder school 

  1. Involve parents, in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of the school plan under Section 1112, schoolwide under Section 1114, and the process of the school review and improvement under Section 1116.

Rena B Wright Primary will involve parents. Parents are provided opportunities to visit the school, observe in the classrooms, and volunteer.

  1. Implement an effective means of outreach to parents of English learners, in a language the parents can understand, to inform them regarding how they can—

  • be involved in the education of their children, and

  • be active participants in assisting their children to—

    • attain English proficiency;

    • achieve at high levels within a well-rounded education; and

    • meet the challenging State academic standards expected of all students

  • Attempts to communicate with parents using several forms of communication (flyers, texts, phone calls, PAS)  in their native language are initiated.

  • Utilize social media as a platform to communicate.

    6. Provide parents of participating children—

  • timely information about programs under this part;

  • a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet;

  • if requested by parents, opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children, and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practically possible. 

We will ensure the responsibility for improved student academic achievement is shared by 

parents,  the entire school staff, and students when addressing the importance of school-parent communication. 

Some two-way communication strategies might be

  • Parent conferences

  • Parent-teacher organizations or school community councils

  • Weekly folders of student work sent home for parent review and comment

  • Phone calls/texts

  • E-mail, school website


7.If a schoolwide program plan is not satisfactory to the parents of participating children, submit any parent comments on the plan when the school makes the plan available to the district.

We met with parents and no feedback was given. Moving forward stakeholders will still have the opportunity to provide input via  survey. 


PART II-REQUIRED SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES FOR HIGH STUDENT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

As a component of the school-level Parent and Family Engagement policy, each school shall jointly develop with parents for all children served under this part, a school-parent compact that outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement.

  • Conduct a parent/teacher conference in elementary schools, annually (at a minimum), during which the compact shall be discussed as the compact relates to the individual child’s achievement.

  • Provide frequent reports to parents on their child’s progress.

  • Provide parents with reasonable access to staff, opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and observation of classroom activities.

  • Ensuring regular two-way, meaningful communication between family members and school staff, and, to the extent practicable, in a language that family members can understand.

Rena B. Wright will:

  • Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the state of Virginia’s student academic achievement standards.

  • Hold parent-teacher conferences regularly.

  • Provide parents with frequent reports on their children’s progress.

  • Provide parents with reasonable access to staff.

  • Provide parents opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s educational experience.

  • Provide incentives for students who show progress toward meeting the school’s attendance goal. 


BUILDING CAPACITY FOR PARENTS AND STAFF – REQUIREMENTS FOR ENGAGEMENT

To ensure effective involvement of parents and to support a partnership among the school involved, parents, and the community to improve student academic achievement, each school and district must:

  • Assist parents in understanding the challenging State academic standards, how to monitor a child's progress, and work with educators.

    • Teachers will provide parents with information regarding upcoming standards and expectations through weekly/bi-weekly/monthly newsletters.

  • Provide materials and training to help parents work with their children, such as literacy training and using technology (including education about the harms of copyright piracy).

    • Provide weekly literacy bags to families filled with books and resources on the child’s level

    • Dream Big Night, parents will be trained on how to incorporate lessons in english, math, and science used at home

    • Provide grade level appropriate books for all students to keep over the summer and families are able to track their progress

    • Provide Scholastic RU Ready kits for incoming kindergarten families to prepare them for entering school which include school supplies, books, family journal, and bag

  • Provide professional development to teachers, specialized instructional personnel, and other staff on the value of parent and their communities to increase academic achievement.

    • Provide monthly professional development with district content specialists

    • Provide ELA and Math professional development on teacher in-service days

    • Teachers and administrators participate in grade level Professional Learning Communities

  • Coordinate and integrate parent engagement programs and activities with other Federal, State, and local programs, including public preschool programs, and conduct other activities, such as parent resource centers, that encourage and support parent engagement.

Rena B. Wright Primary  will coordinate and integrate parent engagement programs/activities using-

  • Social media that connects to parents

  • Parent-teacher conferences

  • Family Nights (District Hispanic Night, Family Fun and Fitness Night, Dream Big–Academic Content event)

  • Volunteers opportunities

  • Spring Fling


Ensure that information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities is sent to the parents. of participating children in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand.

Rena B. Wright Primary ensures that information is communicated through:

  • Monthly Parent Newsletter (Tiger Times) that is translated in Spanish

  • Weekly Thrillshare email/text reminders

The following are allowable activities:

  1. May involve parents in the development of training for teachers, principals, and other educators to improve the effectiveness of such training. (List actions)

  2. May provide necessary literacy training from funds received under this part if the district has exhausted all other reasonably available sources of funding for such training. (List actions)

  3. May pay reasonable and necessary expenses associated with local Parent and Family Engagement activities, including transportation and childcare costs, to enable parents to participate in school-related meetings and training sessions. When the need for transportation is required, the school will reach out to the Title I Family Engagement Specialist to secure resources necessary for the event.  Larger events will offer options for transportation through funding for the event.

  4. May train parents to enhance the involvement of other parents. (List actions)

  5. May arrange school meetings at a variety of times, or conduct in-home conferences between teachers or other educators, who work directly with participating children, with parents who are unable to attend such conferences at school, to maximize Parent and Family Engagement and participation. Make home visits when appropriate–administrators, social worker, and school counselor reach out to families when needed 

  6. May adopt and implement model approaches to improving Parent and Family Engagement. (List actions)

  7. May establish a district parent advisory council to provide advice on all matters related to Parent and Family Engagement in programs supported under this section. (List actions)

  8. May develop appropriate roles for community-based organizations and businesses in Parent and Family Engagement activities. We will continue to partner with local churches and businesses to support Parent and Family Engagement activities.

PART III-ACCESSIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

In carrying out the parent and family engagement requirements of this part, local educational agencies and schools, to the extent practicable, shall provide opportunities for the informed participation of parents and family members (including parents and family members who have limited English proficiency, parents and family members with disabilities, and parents and family members of migratory children), including providing information and school reports required under section 1111 in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language such parents understand. All documents and communications for parents will be available in English and Spanish. 

PART IV-ADOPTION – This Rena B. Wright Primary Parent and Family Engagement Policy/Procedures have been developed/revised jointly with, and agreed upon with, parents of children participating in Title I program, as evidenced by meeting minutes.

The Parent and Family Engagement Policy/Procedures were developed/revised by Rena B. Wright Primary on 11/1/2024 and will be in effect for the period of 2024-2025. The school will distribute these Parent and Family Engagement Policy/Procedures to all parents of participating Title I children and make it available to the community on or before 11/01/2024.
