Principal

Dr. Barry C. Brown has over 28 years as a public school educator. He has served as a general education teacher, special education teacher, central office special education administrator, elementary assistant principal, middle school principal, and elementary school principal. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Norfolk State University, Regent University, and The University of Virginia. He is a retired Army Reserves Officer with his last assignment being a Divisions’ Anti-Terrorism Officer.  

He is a native of Norfolk, Virginia, and married with three children. He holds a doctorate in education from the University of Virginia, his master's degree in elementary education from Old Dominion University, and a bachelor's degree in political science from Norfolk State University. Moreover, he holds a National Principal Mentor Certification from The National Association of Elementary School Principals.    

Dr. Brown has given himself to Church and local organizations including Diaconate Member of First Baptist Church, Bute Street Norfolk, membership in the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Board of Directors of Tidewater Community College, President of the Board of Directors for READY Academy Christian Schools, previously appointed by the Governor of Virginia to serve as a Member of the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, past Vice-President of the Board of Directors of Norfolk Christian Schools.

Assistant Principal

Dr. Julie Dashiell brings over 25 years of rich experience in education, spanning both private and public sectors. She has served for over 16 years as an Adjunct Professor at Old Dominion University and Marymount College. Throughout her career, Dr. Dashiell has excelled in various roles, including general education teacher, Department Chair, educational consultant, Director of a STEAMin3 preschool, literacy trainer, student teacher mentor, and professional development developer and trainer.

Originally from New Orleans, Dr. Dashiell is married with two children who recently earned Engineering degrees from Virginia Tech (Go Hokies!). She holds a doctorate in education from Old Dominion University. She has been recognized with numerous accolades, including Teacher of the Year in Norfolk Public Schools, Teacher of the Year at Norfolk Collegiate School, Transformational Leader in Colorado, and the Exceptional Leadership Award from the Career Switcher Department at Old Dominion University.

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Dashiell enjoys boating, fishing, golfing, beach outings, cooking cajun dishes, and traveling the world. Fondly known as "momma bear" throughout her career, she is celebrated for her deep care and protection of students, staff, and the community. Dr. Dashiell is thrilled to join the Deep Creek Elementary family and looks forward to contributing to the school's vibrant community.
