BusPatrol

We partnered with BusPatrol in 2020 to modernize our entire fleet of over 500 school buses with cutting-edge automated photo enforcement technology. The program creates evidence packages to aid our local law enforcement in addressing illegal school bus passings.

Each year, thousands of children are needlessly put at risk due to reckless and illegal driver behavior around school buses, which can have fatal and tragic consequences.

Remember the School Bus Stopping Law

Red Flashing Lights Mean Stop

Red flashing lights mean that a school bus is stopped and children are getting on or off. All drivers, unless divided by a physical barrier or greenway, must stop before reaching the bus.

Virginia Law
Stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign when approaching from any direction. Remain stopped until everyone is clear and the bus moves again.

If the Bus is Unloading, STOP!

Drivers must stop whenever is bus is loading or unloading passengers, even if the lights and stop sign are not active.

Virginia Law
Stop whenever the bus is loading or unloading passengers, even if the lights and stop sign are not activated. If a school bus is on the opposite side of a median or barrier, motorists aren’t required to stop; however, drivers should be prepared for students exiting the school bus and crossing into their lanes.

Drivers traveling in both directions on two-lanes must stop for school buses. On a multi-lane road with dividers or greenways, drivers in the opposing lanes can proceed with caution. When red lights start flashing, drivers must stop at least 30 feet away from the bus. Drivers opposite a physical barrier may proceed with caution on a divided highway.

Watch For Yellow Lights

Flashing yellow lights indicate that a school bus is preparing to stop or slow down to unload or load children. When a driver sees yellow flashing lights, they should slow down and prepare to stop.
