Beginning in the fall of the 2023-2024 academic year, three middle schools, Hickory Middle, Oscar Smith Middle, and Western Branch Middle, will change from a traditional bell schedule to a modified block schedule. It is important to note that the school start and end times will not be impacted. Families with students attending these three schools can visit the school website to learn more.

On Monday, February 27, 2023, Dr. Freddie Alarcon, director of middle school leadership, along with the principals of the three schools: Dr. Kim Pinello of HMS, Mrs. Deirdre Williams of OSM, and Mrs. Beth Pallister of WBM, presented the full Block Scheduling at the Middle School Level plan to the Chesapeake School Board.
