Of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 students with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either Commended Students or Semifinalists. Two-thirds become commended students, ending their quest for a National Merit Scholarship. The remaining 16,000 students are notified that they have qualified as Semi-finalists. HHS averages about 1 student per year who achieves Commended Student status. This year, however, we are proud to announce that we have two students who did not just achieve commended status, but who have been recognized as semi-finalists for the 2022 National Merit Scholarship. Semifinalists are the highest scoring entrants in each state. The faculty and staff would like to congratulate Eli Boone and Sarah Petchel for representing themselves, HHS, Chesapeake, and the State of Virginia as National Merit Scholarship Semi-finalists.
