Families who selected option 1, the On-Campus Continuum, should review all of the information outlined in the slide deck below. This information includes checklists families should complete now and other important health and safety protocols families should incorporate into their daily school routine.
If your student will not ride a school bus to school, please adhere to this student drop off/pick up plan:
Chesapeake Public Schools offers free bus transportation for all students enrolled at Hickory Elementary. If you prefer to transport your child to school, you may utilize our Kiss and Go parent drop off lane.
Student drop off will begin at 7:15 a.m. daily (please note that supervision is not available prior to this time).
Please enter the parking lot by the marquee and line up at the side door (facing Benefit Road). Students should ONLY exit your vehicle once you have pulled up to the sidewalk and are directed to do so by our staff. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all children must wear a face mask covering their nose and mouth prior to exiting the vehicle. If your student requires assistance with unloading, please park your vehicle and escort your child to the front door entrance.
The instructional school day will begin promptly at 7:35 a.m. Any student arriving after this time will need to be escorted to the front door and signed in by a parent.
**Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no visitors will be permitted in the building.**
Student dismissal will begin promptly at 2:04 p.m. daily. The school buses will be safely loaded and dismissed before parent pickup begins. Parents should plan to arrive no earlier than 2:20 p.m.
Once the school buses have safely exited, parents will be directed to enter the bus ramp at the direction of our staff. Please remain in your vehicle and have your school issued sign posted in your car window. Once we have verified your identity, your child will be escorted to your vehicle.

Welcome From Our Principal- Jay Lewter
On behalf of all of us here at Hickory Elementary School, I would like to welcome you to our school! It is a privilege to serve as principal of Hickory Elementary. Our school has an outstanding reputation, and I am proud to be part of such a wonderful legacy of excellence. Hickory Elementary is filled with enthusiastic students who are ready and willing to learn, supportive families who are interested and involved in their children’s education, and a caring and dedicated professional staff who are committed to providing children with a quality educational foundation for school and beyond. I encourage each family to stay active in your child’s education. School is very much a partnership, and I hope that we will continue in that spirit throughout the school year. Communicate frequently with your child’s teacher, and with me. I realize that you lead busy lives, and it is often difficult to volunteer or visit school. However, taking just a few minutes in the evening to read with your child, talk with your child about school, check your ParentVUE page, or simply see that your child is organized for the next school day can have great benefits. I want Hickory Elementary to be your child’s second favorite place to be, besides being home with you.
Have a wonderful school year!
