Electronic Device Policy

Chesapeake Public Schools have developed a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy for student use. Parents must sign permission slips for their student to have these devices at school. Please be reminded that students should not be called or texted during the school day (8:25-3:23).

Students should only possess or use devices at the request of their teacher, and should only be carried for instructional purposes. Students should not have devices with them when they are in the red zone. Students are responsible for securing their devices in their lockers when not in use. When traveling between classes, devices should be powered off and out of sight. Videos, photos and text messaging are not allowed at any time, including on the bus ramp.

Students who violate the GRM BYOD policy shall be subject to consequences up to and including suspension.The following sequential consequences typically will be applied to violations of this policy:

1st Offense: The cellular telephone, other portable telecommunication device, or electronic device will be confiscated and returned at the end of the school day.

2nd Offense: The cellular telephone, other portable telecommunication device, or electronic device will be confiscated and returned after a parent conference.

3rd Offense: The cellular telephone, other portable telecommunication device, or electronic device will be confiscated and returned to the parent, and the student will be assigned to in-school suspension (ISS).

4th Offense: The cellular telephone, other portable telecommunication device, or electronic device will be confiscated and returned to the parent, and the student will be assigned out-of-school suspension (OSS).

Electronic Readers: Electronic Reading Devices may be used as a tool for reading only. Parents must sign a Permission Form indicating that their child will comply with Chesapeake School Board Policy P9-20.2 and associated regulation R9-20.2.

Chesapeake Public Schools assumes no responsibility in any circumstance for loss, destruction, damage, theft, or charges made on monthly statements for a cellular telephone, portable telecommunication device, or electronic device. Students will be responsible for locating such lost/stolen items.
