Mr. Cavanaugh is beginning his second year as Principal of Deep Creek Middle School, after serving as an Assistant Principal at Indian River Middle School, and prior to that Great Bridge Middle School. Mr. Cavanaugh is beginning his 22nd year in the field of education, and his 18th with Chesapeake Public Schools. He earned a Master of Science in Education from Old Dominion University, as well as an Educational Specialist Degree in Administration and Supervision from The George Washington University. Prior to becoming an Administrator, Mr. Cavanaugh taught Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 at Hickory Middle School for 8 years.
Dr. Lychellia Cheeks comes from a long line of teachers and preachers. Originally born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dr. Cheeks’ family members were educators and administrators in public schools, alternative schools, school board members, as well as Higher Education faculty and staff. She loves Bernard’s Pralines when she visits Louisiana.
Dr. Cheeks earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Indiana State University, Master of Arts in Counseling and Human Services, Master of Education, and a Doctorate in Education from Regent University.
Before coming to Deep Creek Middle School, Dr. Cheeks served as juvenile prevention specialist in the Juvenile Magistrates office, social studies teacher, and club sponsor in Terre Haute, Indiana. After moving to the Commonwealth of Virginia, she served as office manager for Psychological Service Center at Regent University and receptionist at her local church. She has been a classroom social studies teacher and Student Activities Coordinator at Great Bridge High School and an assistant principal at Grassfield High School. Dr. Cheeks brings a wealth of experience from her previous role as a content and Freshman Transition supervisor. She attributes her success to faith, family and the amazing professionals she has worked with along the way.
She lives in Chesapeake with her husband Roger. She is “Moma” to Jillian, RaChelle, Brooke, and Aaron, and “Gram” to Cameron and Anngela. Her education and strong work ethic was gifted to her by her parents Roosevelt and Josephine. She believes that collaborative leadership supports growth for herself and others.
Before becoming an Assistant Principal at Deep Creek Middle School Ress Walker received his Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Lynchburg College. He then received his Masters in Education from Old Dominion University and his Specialist Degree in School Administration from the University of Virginia.
Ress has 20 years of teaching experience in all four core subject areas. Further, he left Grassfield High School where he taught Algebra Inclusion to become a Hornet. He has served as a head football and track coach, Special Education Department Chair, 504 Chair and remediation specialist.
Ress lives in Virginia Beach with his wife April and his three daughters (Ava, Brooke, and Sydney). Purple is his new favorite color.
Mrs. Tracey Sabbato is beginning her fourth year as an assistant principal at Deep Creek Middle after serving as an assistant principal at Greenbrier Middle School and Oscar Smith Middle School. Before becoming an administrator, she taught English at Hickory Middle School and was the Reading Specialist at Greenbrier Middle School. Mrs. Sabbato graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Science degree in Education. She received her endorsement and post master’s certificate in Educational Leadership and Administration from The George Washington University.
Mrs. Sabbato resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Phillip, and their son.
