Mr. Cavanaugh is beginning his fourth year as Principal of Deep Creek Middle School, after serving as an Assistant Principal at Indian River Middle School, and prior to that Great Bridge Middle School. Mr. Cavanaugh is beginning his 24th year in the field of education, and his 20th with Chesapeake Public Schools. He earned a Master of Science in Education from Old Dominion University, as well as an Educational Specialist Degree in Administration and Supervision from The George Washington University. Prior to becoming an Administrator, Mr. Cavanaugh taught Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 at Hickory Middle School for 8 years.
Assistant Principal (6th Grade):
Ms. Kopacz is so excited to be starting her first year as a Deep Creek Middle School Hornet! Ms. Kopacz is beginning her 9th year with Chesapeake Public Schools. Previously, she was a special education teacher at Hugo Owens Middle School who specialized in math. She spent 5 years teaching in 7th grade and 3 years in 6th grade. During her time as an educator, Ms. Kopacz has served on multiple committees and was the Student Council Association (SCA) sponsor!
Ms. Kopacz earned her Bachelor of Science in Education and Masters of Science in Education from Longwood University. She earned her Educational Specialist Degree in Administration and Supervision from Old Dominion University.

Assistant Principal (7th Grade):
Dr. Lychellia Cheeks comes from a long line of teachers and preachers. Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dr. Cheeks’ family consists of educators, administrators in public schools, alternative schools, and school board members, as well as Higher Education faculty and staff.
Dr. Cheeks earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Indiana State University, a Masters and a Doctorate in Education from Regent University.
Dr. Cheeks is beginning her 24th year in education. Before coming to Deep Creek Middle School, Dr. Cheeks served as juvenile prevention specialist in the Juvenile Magistrates office, a social studies teacher, office manager for Psychological Service Center at Regent University, and Student Activities Coordinator at Great Bridge High School. Proudly, she was on the inaugural administrative team at Grassfield High School. Dr. Cheeks brings a wealth of experience from her previous role as a content and Freshman Transition supervisor. She attributes her success to faith, family and the amazing professionals she has worked with along the way.
She lives in Chesapeake where her greatest roles are Moma and Gram. Her education and strong work ethic were gifted to her by her parents, Roosevelt and Josephine.
