The 2021 Winter Sports Season Has Been Cancelled

Chesapeake Public Schools Aims to Protect Student Athletes; School Board Approves the Cancellation of Winter Sports
After considering recommendations from the School Health Advisory Board, and consulting with central office administrators, principals, and athletic directors, Chesapeake’s Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jared Cotton, recommended the winter season be cancelled.
“We are not confident that we can implement the same level of mitigation measures that we are able to provide in our schools that we feel are necessary in order to keep our student athletes safe,” Cotton told the Board. “We plan to petition the VHSL to provide the opportunity to play winter sports later in the school year, and while we hope that option becomes available, we have not received any indication that it will be granted.”
Decisions regarding the status of fall and spring sports will be made as those seasons approach. “This was a very difficult decision,” said Supervisor of Student Activities, Kevin Cole. “Our goal all along has been to ensure the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, and athletic administrators.”
All School Board members in attendance approved the recommendation. The fall sports season will be discussed at the next regular meeting, scheduled for Monday, January 25, 2021, at 6:00 p.m.
