Attendance Policy and Procedures

One room schoolhouseAttendance Matters
Every student.  Every day.

Regular school attendance is imperative to school success.  In Virginia, all students aged five (5) through eighteen (18) are required to attend school regularly.  Deep Creek Elementary must record student attendance every day that school is in session.

Research shows that regular school attendance leads to school achievement!
Check out this website to find out more about the impact of attendance.

Please make sure that you communicae with your child’s teacher any time your child is absent.  Absences can be excused for a documented illness or a death in the immediate family.  Student absences can be logged in ParentVue.  Please refer to this video for more information on logging an absence in ParentVue.  Illness is defined as fever, vomiting, or diarrhea.  If you have questions about whether or not a student should come to school, or if you have a specific concern about your child’s health, please speak with our nurse for more guidance.  We can only accept documentation within four (4) days of the student’s return to school, unless the documentation is from a medical professional (dentist, doctor, therapist, etc.)

  • After 3 unexcused absences, you will receive communication from your child’s teacher (Deep Creek Elementary Policy).
  • After 5 unexcused absences, you will be contacted by a school counselor to create an attendance plan.  A letter and the attendance plan will be sent home.
  • After 7 unexcused absences, another letter is sent home and you will be contacted by an administrator to schedule a conference.
  • After 10 unexcused absences, another letter is sent home and you will be contacted again by an administrator.  A referral is also sent to the Office of Student Services, and further truancy procedures may be necessary.
According to the Virginia Department of Education, chronic absenteeism is defined as a student missing more than 10% of the school year (18 out of 180 days).  This applies to excused and unexcused absences.

Thank you for partnering with us to make sure your child has the best opportunity to succeed.
