OPERATION HERO is going virtual February 1, 2021!
DCES is proud to continue to partner with the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) of Hampton Roads to offer an engaging and interactive 8-week Virtual Op Hero program to support our students from active-duty military families.
Operation Hero is a program designed just for military kids and fosters social connection while equipping them with valuable tools and skills to navigate the challenges of military life. We know these skills are more important now than ever! This program is offered at no-cost to active-duty military dependents in grades 2 through 5. Winter sessions begin Monday, February 1 with weekly videos, activities and two “OpChats” per week where students will have the opportunity to engage with mentors and peers, completing FUN and interactive activities together.
We’re so excited to share this program with you! It is open to students who are currently learning virtually or are attending fact-to-face classes at the school. DCES offered the program last year at the school and participants LOVED Op Hero! Enrollment in this program is limited. Please click on this link to learn more about this amazing enrichment program and to complete your application by Friday, January 15, 2021. Materials and supplies for all participants will be delivered to the school for easy pick up for parents.
Families who selected option 1, the On-Campus Continuum, should review all of the information outlined in the slide deck below. This information includes checklists families should complete now and other important health and safety protocols families should incorporate into their daily school routine.

If your student will not ride a school bus to school, please adhere to this student drop off/pick up plan:
The DCE drop off plan is the same as in years past. Please plan to stay in the pick up line and drop your child off as you get to the front of the building. Due to health mitigations, we will not be opening car doors this year; however, there will be staff members in front of the building. Parents also have the option to park in a parking spot and have his or her child walk across the crosswalk in front of the building. Drop off begins at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 7:34 a.m. Class starts at 7:35 a.m. If you are dropping your child off after 7:35 a.m., you will need to come to the front desk with your mask on, have your temperature taken, and provide your ID to sign your child in. Please refer to the diagram below to review the drop off pattern.
Afternoon pickup will be in a drive thru fashion. Parents and caretakers will not be entering the building for pickup. Your child will be assigned a number and you will receive a card for your front window. Please place your card in the front window upon arrival in the pick up line. When you are nearing the cafeteria doors (on the left hand side of the building), staff will locate your child inside and bring him/her out to you. Please make sure to drive slowly and be patient through this process. If your child is not a permanent parent pickup, the office or their teacher must be notified no later than 1:30 p.m. in order to prepare them for pick up. Parent pickup will begin at 1:50 p.m. When buses are dismissed, the parent pick up line will halted to allow buses to depart.
