Crossing Guard Appreciation Day is a statewide event dedicated to saying thank you to those who help students cross the street safely on their way to and from school. However, we know that our Crossing Guards do so much more than simply help students cross the street on their way to school. Our Crossing Guards cultivate safe communities and provide support in managing hectic morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups by directing automobile traffic. Crossing Guards also help foster a walking and biking culture within our city that is safe and fun. Because of their service, many students are more physically active, socialize with their friends, feel a sense of independence, and spend time outside.
While the Virginia Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program has designated the second Wednesday of February as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, we will recognize the valuable role crossing guards play in making safe routes to school a reality on Thursday, February 11, 2021.
On February 11, 2021, we encourage our schools and the community to thank our crossing guards for their invaluable service. Send a thank you card or share a socially-distanced, personal “Thank you!” to let them know they are appreciated.
