Will meals be provided for students during the closure? (Updated 3/24/2020)

Beginning Wednesday, March 25, 2020, we’ve updated our hours and added additional locations for our Grab-N-Go breakfast and lunch. Meals will be provided at no cost to anyone 18 and under. Students must be present to receive meals.

What if I need to pick up my child’s school supplies, personal belongings, or instrument from the school? (Updated 3/27/2020)

Parents who have an urgent need to collect their child’s essential personal belongings from the school should e-mail their child’s principal or contact the school to arrange a time to pick them up beginning Tuesday, March 31. 2020, through Friday, April 3, 2020, during regular school hours.

Essential personal belongings may include:

  • Medications in the clinic (Tuesday and Thursday only)
  • Personal health items
  • Musical instruments
  • Personal technology devices

Families will be notified when other non-essential personal belongings may be retrieved towards the end of the school year. At that time, students will be permitted to clean out their desks and lockers, check lost and found, and return school-issued items such as library books, textbooks, instruments, athletic uniforms, concert attire, etc. Yearbooks and spring pictures will also be distributed at that time.

School security staff will coordinate the entry of visitors to ensure we follow appropriate safety protocols.  Students will not be permitted without an adult.

What learning resources are available for my child during the closure? (Updated 3/16/2020)

Emergency Learning Plans for priority content areas have been developed and posted here. Parents and guardians may also pick up printed copies of these plans at their school on Monday, March 16, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Printed copies of the Emergency Learning Plans will also be available at school meal distribution locations between 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

What about my child’s Advanced Placement exam(s)? (Updated 3/23/2020)

College Board has posted an update for its 2020 Exam Administration. AP Exams will not be administered in the usual face-to-face fashion, but rather as shortened online tests. There will be two separate dates for which a student can take an exam. Full details will be posted to the College Board website on April 3.

What is the impact of the closure on meeting requirements and mandates associated with testing, instructional time,  and attendance? (Updated 3/25/2020)

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has provided flexibility in meeting the requirements and mandates associated with testing and accountability, instructional days/hours, attendance and graduation. The VDOE will continue to provide updates as additional flexibility is clarified and additional details are received from the U.S. Department of Education. What about seniors?  Will they be able to graduate? (Updated 3/25/2020)

The VDOE has provided flexibility for the Class of 2020 to ensure high school seniors currently on track to earn a diploma this spring will be able to graduate. In the coming weeks, school counselors will use this information to review student transcripts and determine the remaining requirements each Senior will need to complete in order to graduate.  Teachers will work with students to complete standards that need to be covered for the remainder of the semester. Communication regarding your child’s requirements will be sent via the ParentVue and StudentVue e-mail addresses on file.

Will students be able to advance to the next grade level? (Updated 3/25/2020)

It is our intent for students to continue to receive instruction through the remainder of this school year so they have an opportunity to demonstrate grade level/course competencies for credit and/or promotion. With the Governor’s recent executive order for schools to be closed for the remainder of the school year, the VDOE is currently working on providing school districts with flexible options to provide course content.  We are currently reviewing those options and will communicate with families once we determine a plan that will be in the best interest for our students to stay on track.

What about senior celebrations like prom and graduation? (Updated 3/25/2020)

The disruption of a public health crisis in no way diminishes the hard work of our high school seniors.  While we don’t yet know what form it will take, their years of hard work and achievements will be recognized at some point in the future.  Until the public health crisis passes, we are unable to determine if or when traditional graduation ceremonies or other celebrations will occur.

I already paid for a school-related activity.  Can I get a refund? (Updated 3/27/2020)

Refunds for canceled field trips, dances, etc. will be processed by school bookkeepers in April and mailed to the student’s address listed in ParentVue. Thank you for your patience; this process may take some time.

Will home-bound or home-based instruction continue during the closure? (Updated 3/16/2020)

No, all home-bound or home-based services are suspended during the closure. We encourage these students to use the Emergency Learning Plans during the closure.

What if my child has an upcoming special education meeting? (Updated 3/15/2020)

Your child’s case manager will be in contact with you. 

Will school-sponsored trips, athletics, or other events be cancelled? (Updated 3/15/2020)

All after-school events and extra-curricular activities beyond the instructional day have been suspended until further notice. This includes any school-sponsored trips and all athletic practices.

Will community members still be able to hold events at our schools? (Updated 3/14/2020)

In order to prioritize custodial resources and supports, all non-district building use requests and events in our schools will be suspended until further notice.  The Office of Student Activities and Facility Use will communicate with all contacts.

How can I help? (Updated 3/24/2020)

  • Individual Donations: If individuals are interested in making monetary donations, please visit www.unitedwayshr.org and donate to the Coronavirus Recovery Fund.
  • Corporate Donations: Businesses wishing to donate may visit www.cpsef.org and donate to the Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation.

How can I help prevent the spread of COVID-19?

Common cold and flu viruses are not unusual during the winter season.  As a best practice for overall health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that individuals practice everyday, preventative measures to help avoid illness, such as:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a sleeve or a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
