Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the role of African Americans in U.S. history. The 2023 theme, “Black Resistance,” explores sit-ins, boycotts, walk outs, strikes and other resistance activities by Black people and their allies. These actions and alliances were crucial in the fight for justice against discrimination in all sectors of society from employment to education to housing. The annual theme celebrating Black History month is selected by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH®). The mission of the ASALH is to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history, and culture to the global community.
In Chesapeake, there are several events and activities planned to commemorate Black History Month. Within our district, schools are hosting a wide range of activities that promote Black history and culture. Some of these events and activities will be highlighted on our website, on our social media channels, and in our Superintendent’s Spotlight throughout the month. Within our city, the Chesapeake Public Library hosts a special webpage that provides virtual programming and many other opportunities to learn, commemorate, and celebrate Black History.
