The Weekly BRI Update
May 22, 2022
Dear BRI families,
Here we go! SOL testing began on Friday with our 5th graders showing that hard work and dedication pay off. This week our 3rd and 4th graders get in on the action. We have PLENTY to share, so please take a second to review this week’s BRI Weekly Update..
SOL Testing is in full swing this coming week. Here is our BRI SOL Testing SCHEDULE. Please review the schedule with your student(s). Send them to school with words of encouragement and support on those testing days and let them know how proud you are of their work. Students who do not meet the proficiency level but score between 375 and 399 will be provided an opportunity to re-test, given parent permission. Parents, BRI will contact you and seek permission should your student score in this range.
Preparing your student for SOL Testing:
SOL assessments give students a chance to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities they have worked hard at developing. It can be an exciting time, but for some, a stressful time. Guiding our students through this experience is important. Check out these helpful test taking tips for parents and students. Take some time to see how you can help your student show their best on the SOL assessments.
Field Day June 13:
Information about Field Day will be sent home soon. Look for a letter / note from Mr. Dekker concerning everything Field Day in an upcoming Thursday envelope.
Cheer Information for Rising 6th graders at HMS:
Rising 6th graders who will be attending HMS and are interested in Cheer next school year are encouraged to check out this LINK for more information.
If you would like to schedule a “lunch date” with your student, please contact the main office at least 24 hours in advance to reserve a spot. Space is limited, so please plan ahead. Please note that adult lunches are not available from the cafeteria at this time. Please see the Classroom Treats section below for details about food items.
PTA 5th Grade Celebration Update:
The end of the year is rapidly approaching and our team of 5th grade luncheon volunteers has been hard at work to ensure that this event is something for our students to remember for years to come. The luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, June 15th, from 12:00-2:00pm, rain or shine. Thank you for your continued support of our super students. We are thrilled to bring this celebration back to BRI!

Volunteers, Visitors, and Classroom Treats:
If you would like to volunteer at BRI, a Google Form has been posted on our school website under the “Families” tab where you can indicate your areas of interest. Volunteers will be contacted, as needed, by our volunteer coordinator. Your child’s teacher may also reach out for assistance with special classroom activities or needs. All visitors and volunteers are required to stop at the security desk to present a picture ID and receive a visitor badge. Lastly, providing treats must be coordinated with the classroom teacher at least 24 hours in advance. The health and safety of our students is paramount. Advanced notice allows our staff to check for possible student allergies and contact parents about options. Additionally, it allows the teacher to plan how the treat will fit into the schedule on the selected date.
Free Meals to End June 30:
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced meals at no cost to students will end on June 30, 2022. Breakfast and lunch will continue to be offered daily at no cost for the remainder of this school year. Students will be required to pay for meals based on eligibility for free, reduced, or full-price meals when school opens in September 2022. More information will be forthcoming.
School Bus Hub App:
School Bus Hub is a secure, online portal for parents. Once families create their free account, they can receive real-time bus location information. If you are having difficulty with the app, please ensure all your information is accurate in Synergy. If you haven’t tried Bus Hub or want more information click here.
Become a Community Partner in 22-23:
BRI is looking to establish Community Partnerships for the upcoming 22-23 school year. Civic organizations, church groups, and private businesses all make great community partners. Give us a call to become a partner! Contact our main office at (757) 482-4566 for more information.
Book Vending Machine Donations:
Did you know that our BRI Bookworm Vending Machine has provided more than 400 FREE books to students this year! Students are so motivated to show SOARing hawk behaviors in hopes of earning a coin each month. We are so thankful for the many donations to our machine, which has helped make it such a success. If you are interested in donating, we have an Amazon wishlist set up. Additionally, our PTA has set up a Scholastic Teacher Account – any Scholastic books parents order for their children will earn points that the PTA can use for purchasing more books for the vending machine. If your child’s teacher doesn’t already have a Scholastic ordering code, please consider using the PTA code for any Scholastic book order you place: YLF7N.
Weekly Spirit Days:
Every Tuesday is Teal Tuesday. Students and staff are encouraged to wear their “Real Teal” to show off that school spirit. Every Friday is a School Spirit Day. Students and staff are encouraged to wear their BRI spirit wear and/or school colors.
School Calendar Reminders:
Need to confirm the school schedule? You can view our CPS updated calendar on our website. We do have some changes to the original BRI events calendar.
