BRI Weekly Update from Mr. Foltz

The BRI Weekly Update

December 5, 2021

Dear BRI families,

It is hard to believe but December has arrived! I hope this week’s update finds each of you safe and joyful as you prepare for the holidays. We have lots to share so please take some time to review the newest edition of the BRI Weekly Update.

Hawk Academy:

BRI is dedicated to providing our students with as many avenues to learning success as possible. This year, BRI has developed Hawk Academy sessions as an added support. Hawk Academy sessions are available to provide students with additional learning opportunities. Hawk Academy teachers will provide reading and math sessions, by grade level, with specific learning focuses. Parents and students are encouraged to review the schedule of sessions and RSVP for those sessions the student wishes to attend. Some students will receive individual invitations to attend particular sessions as VIPs. For more details, check out the BRI Hawk Academy Schedule and RSVP webpage. Please note all sessions are in-person at BRI EXCEPT the virtual sessions with Ms. Bottom. These virtual sessions are marked as such on Ms. Bottom’s RSVP form. Additionally, in person sessions on early release days have different start and end times. Please make note of these times for student pick-up.

BRI Update on Homework:

Recently, BRI updated it’s homework standards in an effort to better support a more rounded approach to student development. Moving forward, homework may include incomplete classwork, studying for tests / quizzes, long term projects, and 20 minutes of reading. Additionally, online resources, such as RAZ Kids and eSpark, are available to all students who seek additional practice or extension activities. Parents should continue to utilize the teacher’s Schoology page to identify daily work, upcoming assessments, projects and all things related to class expectations. Please reach out to your individual teacher for further details.

Music Department Coffee Fundraiser:

Support the BRI Music Department by participating in it’s Coffee Fundraiser! Funds raised directly support music initiatives and activities at BRI. Mr. Stokes has a passion for music and it shows everyday through his work with our students. Check out the BRI webpage for more details. Final day to order is Wednesday, December 8th!

Book Vending Machine Donations:

Our Bookworm Vending Machine has provided more than 120 FREE books to students this year!  They are so motivated to show SOARing hawk behavior in hopes of earning a coin each month.  We are so thankful for the many donations to our machine, which has helped make it such a success.  If you are interested in donating, we have an Amazon wishlist set up.  Additionally, our PTA has set up a Scholastic Teacher Account – any Scholastic books parents order for their children will earn points that the PTA can use for purchasing more books for the vending machine.  If your child’s teacher doesn’t already have a Scholastic ordering code, please consider using the PTA code for any Scholastic book order you place:  YLF7N.

Community Partners:

We are looking for community organizations and businesses to partner with BRI to support the our  educational experience. Civic organizations, church groups, and private businesses all make great partners! Want to partner with us? Contact our main office at (757) 482-4566 for more information. Currently, we are looking to partner with someone to powerwash our school sidewalks and to help reimagine our courtyard. Give us a call to become a partner!

Upcoming Vaccine Clinics:

CPS is continuing its partnership with Rite Aid to provide vaccine clinics for all eligible individuals. All of our clinics are open from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. The upcoming clinics listed below will have vaccines available for children ages 5-11.  You can see all upcoming dates and register to attend any of these clinics using the CPS web calendar.

December 8 – Oscar Smith High (advanced registration is required for all age levels at this clinic)

In addition, the Chesapeake Health Department is hosting free COVID testing and vaccination opportunities throughout the month.

Quarantine Protocols:

We are seeing an increase in flu and strep throat cases with symptoms similar to COVID-19. Students and staff who are symptomatic AND have no known COVID-19 exposures may receive an at-home rapid test from the school nurse.  If the rapid test result is negative, students and staff may return to school or work once symptoms improve and are fever-free for 24 hours.  Students and staff who have had a COVID-19 exposure will continue to be required to quarantine for 10 days.

Continuity of Learning:

It may be necessary, at times, for students and staff to quarantine due to a COVID-19 exposure. When this occurs, BRI is prepared to provide instructional guidance and learning opportunities. Teachers will reach out to quarantined students to identify whether live or recorded instruction will be provided. Additionally, learning resources will be made available through the students’ schoology class page. Attendance procedures for quarantined students were recently updated. “Meaningful Interaction” will no longer be used as an attendance code.  If a student is quarantined and has meaningful interaction (attending a live session or completing a daily assignment), the student will be marked “present.”  If a student does not have meaningful interaction, that student will be marked “absent excused.” Guidance from the Center of Teaching and Learning on tracking and defining attendance has been updated on the CPS website.

Recently, an added level of support has been provided that will benefit our quarantined students. BRI will have an online tutor available to support quarantined students during the school day. Once this additional layer of support has been finalized we will provide additional details through the BRI webpage.
