The School Board of Chesapeake Public Schools (CPS) approved Superintendent Dr. Jared Cotton’s recommendation to appoint the following individuals to new roles within the district starting July 1, 2022:
Mrs. Diane Edwards has been named interim chief academic officer, a cabinet-level position in the School Administration Building. Mrs. Edwards has 32 years of career experience spanning multiple roles and levels in our schools and administrative buildings. She will leave her role as director of assessment and accountability, a position she has held since 2014. Dr. Penny Schultz is appointed assistant director of school safety and security. Dr. Schultz has 22 years of career experience, 9 of which have been served in Chesapeake. Dr. Schultz currently serves as principal of Oscar Smith Middle. She is excited to work towards the district strategic goal of providing a safe and supportive learning environment throughout the district.
Dr. Brooke Rudis is appointed assistant director of student conduct and supports. Dr. Rudis is completing her 24th year in education. Dr. Rudis has served in the division of school leadership and support for the past 7 years as assistant director of student conduct and supports. In her new role, she is looking forward to continuing collaborative relationships with school leaders and promoting best practices for safety in our schools.
Mr. Michael Ward will be a human resources administrator in the School Administration Building. He has served all 30 years of his career in education in Chesapeake. Mr. Ward is currently the principal of Crestwood Middle. He is grateful for his 22 years of service in the Crestwood community and ready for this next chapter of his career where he is excited to support the human resources staff and their efforts to recruit, retain, and support our valued employees.
Dr. Barry Brown will be the new principal of Crestwood Middle. He has 25 years of career experience with 21 of those years served in Chesapeake. Dr. Brown is currently the principal of Deep Creek Elementary. He is “excited to join the Falcon family and return to the middle school learning environment”.
Mr. Keith Hyater will be the new principal of Greenbrier Middle. Mr. Hyater has served all 32 years of his career in education in Chesapeake. For the last 14, he has served as principal of Greenbrier Intermediate. Mr. Hyater is filled with Panther pride and is honored to continue his work in the Greenbrier community.
Mrs. Deirdre A. Williams will be the new principal of Oscar Smith Middle School. She is a veteran of the United States Air Force and has 17 years of experience in education. She has served as a teacher, special education administrator PK-12, elementary and middle school assistant principal, and elementary principal. In addition, for the past two years, Mrs. Williams has served as principal at Treakle Elementary School. Mrs. Williams is elated to partner with the Oscar Smith Middle School staff, students, and families. She is committed to ensuring continued success and why Tiger Nation remains the best!
The following appointments were also approved during the April 25, 2022, School Board meeting:
Mr. Wellinthon Muñoz, from principal, Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School, Rochester, New York, to assistant principal, Oscar Smith High.
Ms. Kim Saunders, from assistant principal, Crestwood Intermediate, to assistant principal, Hugo Owens Middle.
Mr. Colin Jones, from assistant principal, Indian River Middle, to assistant principal, Rena B. Wright Primary.
In addition, the Board was presented with the following individuals selected to fill assistant principal I positions for the 2022-2023 school year. This did not require Board action.
Mrs. Jennifer Sagendorf, from instructional coach at Camelot Elementary to assistant principal I, Butts Road Intermediate.
Ms. Ashley Bullock, from teacher at Deep Creek High to assistant principal I, Great Bridge High.
Mrs. Kerri Lancaster, from academy coordinator at Oscar Smith High to assistant principal I, Indian River High.
Mrs. Jean-Marie Parke, from teacher at Edwards Wilson Center to assistant principal I, Western Branch Primary.
