Congratulations to Lee Mongold, a social studies teacher at Grassfield High School (GFH), recently awarded the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award for 2019-2020. Mongold was instrumental in bringing to life memories of the Cornland schoolhouse, a historic black-only school in southern Chesapeake. Her students interviewed former attendees of the school in capturing the history of this significant landmark. As the daughter of a U. S. Army veteran, Ms. Mongold has first-hand knowledge of the sacrifices that military families make to support loved ones overseas and the invaluable role they and America play in the world. She is a significant supporter of GFH’s Field of Valor, which honors servicemen and women.
Mongold will be recognized on January 11, 2020, at the VFW Winter Convention and by Post 2894 at their annual awards ceremony on May 13, 2020. She is now in the running for the VFW’s National Teacher of the Year.
