Every ten years, the U.S. Census Bureau reports the number of people who live in the United States by conducting a count called the census. The U.S. Constitution requires the federal government count everyone living in the country every ten years. Census Day is April 1, 2020, and the information gained from this count will be used to determine the number of representatives Chesapeake is allotted at both the state and federal levels. In addition, the results of the count will also affect how government agencies allocate roughly $675 billion in public funding each year, including:
- Title I Program allocations
- College grant and loan programs
- Public transportation
- Road and community improvements
- Public health services and hospitals
- Neighborhood improvements
- Senior services
The 2020 Census questionnaire is short, takes 10 minutes to complete, and is 100 percent confidential. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share the personal information that you provide with any other governmental or non-governmental agency. Non-identifying, statistical data based on your responses will be used by a variety of organizations, from government agencies to business and civic groups, to make important decisions about where to build community centers, schools, hospitals, roads, restaurants and stores, etc.
Achieving a complete and accurate census count is vital to making sure that Chesapeake gets its fair share of governmental representation and funding. Everyone living in your household should be counted, including all children, infants and adults, regardless of nationality, citizenship status, race, age or gender.
When you receive your questionnaire in the mail soon, please fill it out and mail it back quickly. Mailing the form back is much less expensive than having a census taker visit your household. The questionnaire will also be available to complete online.
Thank you for your support in making sure that Chesapeake achieves a complete and accurate census count.
