Thirty schools earned the 2021 Purple Star Designation from the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on the Educational Opportunity of Military Children. B.M. Williams Primary, Butts Road Intermediate, Camelot Elementary, Cedar Road Elementary, Chittum Elementary, Crestwood Intermediate, Deep Creek Elementary, Deep Creek Central Elementary, Deep Creek Middle, Deep Creek High, Georgetown Primary, Grassfield Elementary, Grassfield High, Great Bridge Primary, Great Bridge Intermediate, Greenbrier Primary, Hickory Middle, Hickory High, Indian River High, Oscar Smith High, Rena B. Wright Primary, Southeastern Elementary, Southwestern Elementary, Sparrow Road Intermediate, Thurgood Marshall Elementary, G.A. Treakle Elementary, Truitt Intermediate, Western Branch Primary, Western Branch Intermediate, and Western Branch High join 13 other Chesapeake Public Schools designated as Purple Star schools.
The Virginia Purple Star Designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military.
The Purple Star Award is awarded to schools who meet the requirements outlined in the Virginia Purple Star designation qualification standards. Honored schools have successfully demonstrated their commitment to meeting the needs of military students by providing resources and programming on issues important to military families, such as academic planning and transitions between schools, districts, and states.
Purple Star schools retain the designation for three years before being required to reapply.
